By 2016, the northern regions of Russia must monitor the areas using airships equipped with thermal imaging cameras, laser sensors, radar and cameras. Their use is included in the "Innovative transportation of the North" "road map", developed by a working group of the Military Industrial Commission (MIC) of the Russian Government, according to "Izvestia".
The "road map" mentions two aircraft models - unmanned airship DP- 27 "Anuta" and tethered balloon EMAA. The document mentions the use of aircrafts to the control oil and gas pipelines. Experts believe that the airships are promising only in the case of serial production.
"Airships can get double use. Now they have been forgotten, but they are cheap enough - in mass production. Otherwise it is not cheap to exploit them, because of the need in special infrastructure", - told MIC to the edition.
The edition notes that Russia has to compete primarily with the United States, Canada, Denmark and Norway in defending interests in the Arctic. Other states are telling about their interests in this region too - China, South Korea, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Sweden and the UK.
U.S. interests in the region are determined not only by the resources. Washington benefits to place missile defense system in the Arctic and it is important for it to demonstrate the presence of its armed forces there. The Russian Defense Ministry is planning to complete the formation of the Arctic troops grouping in 2014. Arctic airfields network and berths for nuclear submarines are being restored by command of Vladimir Putin.
